Every home has a story — and some are about far more than bricks and boards. In Cedar Rapids, Hope CDA is writing new stories of second chances, one home at a time.
In the aftermath of the devastating 2008 flood, the city faced the immense task of rebuilding entire neighborhoods and restoring a sense of community. Among those who stepped forward was Skogman Realtor® Terry Knake, who, along with a small group of volunteers and community leaders, saw an opportunity to do more than replace what was lost — to help people rebuild their lives.

When the City of Cedar Rapids began offering vacant lots for affordable housing, that group came together with a shared purpose: to bring those spaces — and the people connected to them — back to life. Out of that collective effort, Hope CDA was officially established as a nonprofit organization in 2010.
Five years later, Hope CDA launched what is now known as the Life Transformation Program, a structured, faith-based initiative designed to help men seeking a second chance after challenges such as addiction, incarceration, or homelessness. Participants enter a 12-month program that combines hands-on construction experience with mentorship, life skills development, and recovery support — giving them the tools to rebuild both homes and futures.
Since its founding, more than 100 men have joined the program, with 34 graduates successfully completing the 12-month journey. Together, they’ve helped restore or build over 30 homes throughout Cedar Rapids — creating affordable housing, revitalizing neighborhoods, and strengthening the community.

One of the organization’s most recent accomplishments is the renovation of 1442 4th Ave SE in Cedar Rapids — a beautifully renewed home that stands as a visible reminder of what’s possible when compassion meets opportunity. [View the listing here.]
