The Holocaust is a tragic event which shall never be forgotten. Its effects are still felt today as the stories of victims and survivors course through society. Skogman is a proud sponsor of those stories and strives to call attention to the impact they have created. The Iowa City Community Theatre is putting on a production of, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” a play which centers around a young Jewish girl forced into hiding to escape Nazi persecution. Rachel Howell, an Office Administrator at Skogman Coralville, is the director of the production. Additionally, Allison Hall, a REALTOR at Skogman Coralville, designed the lobby which captures the audience as soon as they enter the theater.
In order to further perpetuate these stories and engage in an active dialogue, there will be a live panel discussion following the first matinee on April 23, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Panel leaders include Sonja Spear, Students Against Hate, and former congressman Jim Leach. The event will be moderated by Saunia Powell, Religious Education director at the Unitarian Universalist Society. Additionally, there will be American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters for both the performance and the panel afterwards.
“Anne’s message is timeless. Her ability to maintain hope through some of the darkest moments in history are a lesson in humanity, and a gift to those of us who despair,” lamented director Rachel Howell. “It is essential to remember her sacrifice, and heed her wish that we honor love over hate, no matter the cost.”
The lessons learned from the Holocaust are extremely important and actively contribute to the societal makeup witnessed today. Skogman cares about the stories generated from the Holocaust, as well as passing those stories onto generations to come. The production of, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” will engage audiences and bring to life the story of a young Jewish girl in World War II.
